Motorcycling legend killed in a collision with a lorry, near his home in Birmingham, after popping out for a take-away supper with his daughter. Hailwood took nine world motorcycling championships in 250, 350 and 500 cc and won 12 Tourist Trophies. On four wheels, he was adept but never came close to the same success, largely finishing in motor racing after breaking his leg at the 1974 German Grand Prix.
