A massive crash in 1968 led to him suffering injuries from which he has never made a truly full recovery. Among the permanent consequences of the crash are scars and epilepsy. He turned his back on the sport and went off to new experiences and made the most of life - he enjoyed flying and lived on a yacht on the coast of Southern France. However in recent years, he has drifted back towards the sport and in 2008, he made a surprise, but very welcome, return to the tracks for the first time in 40 years, when he visited the Thruxton circuit for the track's 40th anniversary celebrations. Now re-married, he lives in the Midlands, where he still follows the sport, watching it on the TV.
