Currently living in Macclesfield, where he is involved in his daughter's carwash business, and previously ran his garage business, although he is now retired from that. An influential member of the British Racing Drivers Club, he had a long spell as a director and administrator. Still very much involved with the historic side of the sport as well. Cardwell began racing in 1963 in club events in his Lotus 7, before making the step up in 1964 in a Brabham BT9 in major events in the UK, including British Formula 3, before racing internationally one year later. He also raced in sportscars on occasion, before retiring from the sport in 1968 to concentrate on business demands. He has also been involved in estate management.
