Best remembered for his racing in Formula Libre, in which he was very competitive and Formula 3. Still involved with his mechanical engineering and wholesale business. Rod was particularly associated with a Brabham BT23C-FVA, which he bought from Bob Howlings in 1970 and then later sold back to Howlings one year later. However Pickering was also driving a Lotus 22 back in the late 1960's in Formula 3 and Formula Libre and took notable triumphs at the Morning Telegraph Trophy at Cadwell Park and the Hagley Trophy at Castle Combe in the latter series, in 1967. He also drove a twin-cam BT18. Rod also designed and raced a series of FF single seaters with flame retardant plastic - replacing the fibre glass bodyworks used at the time - throughout circuit racing. The cars were called BGS and 6 were built and raced relatively successfully.
