Son of Inico, a gentleman sportscar driver in the 1950's, Bernabei now runs a garage in Rome. After assistance from his father, he started racing in 1960 and became a regular in Formula Junior. Bernabei greatly impressed when racing in the non-Championship Formula 1 race at Vallelunga in 1963, being in the lead when he was forced to retire, but his career never gained much more momentum upwards, with hillclimbing more frequent subsequently. However, he won the 1968 Italian Formula 3 championship and carried on racing until 1977.
