Excellent racer who never made it to Formula 1, but who did race in many non-championship and Aurora F1 events, winning in the latter at Donington Park in 1978. Giancarlo was also the 1973 Formula Italia champion with Minardi. The uncle of Pierluigi and Oliver, Martini was mostly in Formula 3, and his work in that series, and Formula 2 was of huge benefit to Minardi in their early days and helped them towards their Formula 1 efforts, when, of course, Pierluigi then drove for the team. Sadly, Giancarlo died in 2013, aged sixty-six.
