Raced on, very successfully too, in touring cars after his Formula 1 and Formula 2 spells finished - he became 1985 European Touring Car Champion, the 1988 Italian Touring Car champion and also won the 1989 Spa 24 Hours touring car race. He largely stayed in the discipline until 1999, when he retired, although he did also have a spell in motorbike racing in the early 1990's. Since 1999, he's kept a very low profile away from the sport, although in 2016, he returned to the circuits, competing in historic events, which includes touring car racing in New Zealand and the 2017 Silverstone Classic, amongst other appearances. Brancatelli started quite late in the sport - aged 23 - but made a rapid rise through the ranks to make up for it.
