A true Grand Prix legend, Gilles was killed in a horrific crash in qualifying for the Belgian GP at Zolder. One of the fastest, bravest and most determined drivers of his - and any - era, Villeneuve had his dark sides (stubborn and over-aggressive) but his death and the circumstances around it, elevated him into racing folklore for ever. Initially Gilles had a interest and passion for music following his father's work in piano tuning but he soon discovered racing, where he competed in snowmobiles as a teenager before moving up the single-seater ranks, where his legend grew and grew as he progressed.
