Involved in the Italian Sporting Commission for many years after having a leg amputated in 1955, which ended a potentially promising career. Sergio only took up the sport a few years prior to that in 1952 as a hobby with his main focus being his business demands, but strong sportscar showings convinced him to take the sport up full-time. In 1953 he came third at the Targa Florio, beat Luigi Musso at a sportscar race in Caserta and made his Grand Prix debut. In 1954 he was Maserati's works driver and twice came fifth in World Championship events.
