Set up a drivers racing school and became an accomplished author before his peaceful death, aged 81. A cultured, intelligent man, he also worked as a team manager. Initially adept in tennis and skiing, Piero took up motorcycle racing after his father bought him a bike for passing his school exams. Taruffi then followed this up with a degree in engineering. He took up racing on four wheels in 1931, but still stayed in bike racing as Gilera's team manager. After World War Two, he was in a similar role with Cisitalia and became feted for his joint engineering and driving knowledge. Although Piero had never been a front-ranking driver, the early 1950's actually saw him at his peak; winning the 1952 Swiss Grand Prix, the 1956 Nurburgring 1000kms, the 1957 Mille Miglia, the 1951 Carrera Panamericana and the 1954 Targa Florio. Piero retired shortly after winning the Mille Miglia in 1957 and later became a team manager again for Lucky Casner's Camoradi team until 1961.
