A graduate of mechanical engineering at the Politechino di Torini, Luca also studied at Leeds University. He worked for Tyrrell in their last year od racing in systems analysis before they became BAR, for whom he also worked. He has also had spells at Toyota and McLaren in Formula 1, spending 10 years at the Woking based team as head of stress analysis, head of structural design and project leader. He moved back to Italy in 2011 to become chief designer at Toro Rosso before joining Sauber in 2017. He was chief designer ever since Sauber became Alfa Romeo but left them to join Aston Martin in 2021.
