Was still racing up to the day of his death, when he was thrown from a vintage open wheeler at Willow Springs raceway. He suffered a continuation of heart-attacks and died, on arrival, at Lancaster's Antelope Valley Hospital. Cal was a midget car expert who initially looked set to be an American Football star with a scholarship all lined up, but upon returning from a game, he crashed his motorbike and lost his left leg. He studied to become a barber instead and worked in that profession for a while. He then became a stunt motorcyclist in 1937 and then became a Hollywood stunt man. Somewhat amazingly considering his handicap, he became a successful motorcycle racer and was also President of the Southern California Motorcycle Club. Due to his stuntman roles, he was already friends with many actors and in his time in charge of the SCMC, he could count Ward Bond and Clark Gable as friends. Cal later lived in Hawaii.
