A member of the banking family, Arbuthnot had the finance to enjoy racing, but World War 2 came at his peak. Died in a road accident, when he and another car collided into each other whilst on a two-way overtaking lane on the Watford bypass. The family name is still involved in lower-level motor racing. Arbuthnot was a very distant relative of King Henry VII, King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. A student of both Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Arbuthnot was the son of Major Kenneth Wyndham Arbuthnot, who was killed when Robert was just one year old, in the Battle of Ypres in the First World War. Major Arbuthnot had served his country in Chitral, the Boer War and the Battle of Khartoum. Robert's grandfather worked in banking in India.
