Killed in a multi-car pile-up in the last race of the season. Two time Indianapolis 500 champion, who won the IRL title for Andretti Green Racing as well as the 2005 Indy 500. Also won at Daytona (in 2006) and was lined up for a full-time seat in 2012 before his death, whilst arguably at his peak. Wheldon was also a dementia charity campaigner as his mother (who died a few years after Dan) suffered from early-onset dementia. Wheldon's immense success in America came after a few years of both sponsorship struggles and mixed results in British lower formulae.
