Best remembered as a sprint car driver, though he did other forms of racing, including dirt oval racing. Failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 five times. Remained interested in the sport until his death, from cancer, in 2011. Jones carried on racing until 1973, and often wore his buttoned-down sweater when racing. Jones was a particular stand-out of the Californian Racing Association sprint car series, winning many races and raced in many Champ Car events, often on dirt ovals, but enjoyed a long USAC career and remained a popular man.
