For a while in 2015, Kurt was banned indefinitely by NASCAR for physical assault on his former girlfriend, but returned to racing in the series in which he was one of NASCAR's top drivers - the 2004 Champion, with over 30 wins and 25 poles in 675 plus races. His career had not been without controversy on or off the track prior to the assault, but he remained a popular, albeit divisive figure until the ban in 2015. A year previously, he finally realised a long held ambition to race in the Indianapolis 500, which has been his only real foray into open-wheel racing. In 2023, he initially went part-time to NASCAR and in the summer, announced his retirement from NASCAR due to lingering effects of concussion and other ailments. He remains in a management role with the team he competed for, 23XI.
