Aircraft engineer and driving instructor during World War 2, Roy was excellent in midgets pre-war, but died in a race shortly after racing returned in 1946. Russing won the AAA Pacific Coast Midget Championship in 1940 and 1941, but also had a reputation for taking risks. He won nearly 50 midget races, including the last pre-war Turkey Night Grand Prix, which he won in 1940. After the war, Russing bought a Kurtis Kraft Offy, but he only had a few races in it before he was killed. His widow, Jo, decided to keep the car and run it again with another driver, which it did for a year or so afterwards.
