Johnny was the Ferrari importer for whole of the Denver region for many years and often raced in those cars in all disciplines. He also was the founder of the US truck driving school (in the 1950's) and was still involved with that until the day of his death, when after returning from the bank, he crashed his car on the highway, dying instantly in a head-on collision. Mauro competed at his only Indianapolis 500 start, however, in his own Alfa Romeo. Johnny became a regular attendee and challenger at the Pike's Peak Hill Climb event and was also a strong sportscar racer. In later years, Mauro drove either his, or other classic cars, in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade. Mauro was one of the original inductees in the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame.
