Killed during qualifying in a dirt car race. Worked as a research engineer for the LGS Spring Clutch company. His unfortunate widow had already been widowed once before by a racing accident as she was the wife of Spider Matlock, Al Gordon's racing mechanic, who was killed in a crash in January 1936. Al, whose full name was Adelbert, was often listed as being from California, but actually came from Utah. Putnam tended to be a big race specialist, focusing more on races like the Indianapolis 500 rather than racing week-in, week-out.
