Wilburn was based largely on the West Coast, with his base initially in Portland, Oregon, and then moving to his birthplace in Los Angeles. He competed from the early 1930's until 1950, partly because an injury in 1948 had started to affect his driving ability. He won numerous titles in sprint car races and Championships on the Pacific coast, but once he retired, he and his wife decided to live on the opposite side of the country and Florida, where he passed away in 1984.
