A succession of crashes ended his career in the early 1970's, and he struggled to cope without driving. After an attack on his mother, Lee Roy, real name, Lonnie, was committed to a mental hospital for life. In 1984, he suffered a seizure and fell, hitting his head and died the next day, from his head injury. Yarbrough was a long-time stock car driver in various categories, including NASCAR, where he won fifteen times, including winning the Daytona 500 in 1969 and the Charlotte 600 in 1969 and 1970.
