Indy 500s: | 4 (1926-1929) |
Holds the dubious distinction of being the first Indianapolis 500 pole-sitter to finish last (in 1929). However he achieved more success on his debut there, finishing 3rd. Cliff was mainly a dirt-track racer who combined his racing with running his dealership in Chicago. Woodbury was still competitive when he retired from racing in 1929, shortly after his disappointing Indy effort, when he crashed very heavily trying to avoid Ray Keech's crashed car at Altoona. He escaped relatively lightly compared to some, but still spent a month in hospital for skull injuries and other head injuries and decided it wasn't worth risking his life returning.
