Worked as a car dealer and was based in Los Angeles, California for a large part of his life. Initially Simpson worked as an apprentice mechanic and machinist in Newark, New Jersey, before moving to California in the 1920's. He relieved Wesley Crawford for forty-five laps in the 1929 Indianapolis 500. Twice married, Simpson overcame a severe bout of tuberculosis in 1940. He served his country in World War 1, becoming a sergeant in the US Army. Although he raced as Ted, and is listed as that in some census information, his real name was Stuart Clark Simpson.
