Born George Stewart, he legally changed his name in deference to Arthur as part of a promotional ruse, posing as a foreign war hero who couldn't speak English so that races in California could have some glamour. Stewart, who was an immensely confident, outgoing man was actually a taxi driver! Closely linked with Bugatti, he continued racing until the early 1930's, being especially strong on board tracks. The name game continued when Jigger Sirois was born, as Jigger's real name is Leon Duray Sirois! Duray later became a car owner. Leon was the first driver to use methanol at the Indianapolis 500 and also raced an ear-busting 16 cylinder two-stroke engine there. Duray also had a movie role in the 1929 movie called Speedway, starring Jimmy Cagney.
