Ben was short for Benton. Worked as a businessman, running and being a director of the Wolfe Store in Mattoon, where he was based for most of his life. Shoaff raced for some time, originally starting in 1917, following that up with some races in the next couple of years, mostly at the Uniontown Speedway. After taking a break to concentrate on business, he nearly caused a sensation at the Indianapolis 500, running second with only two laps to go before a broken pinion gear sidelined him.
