Ran and drove in his own team in CART. His son, AJ, raced for some years and Bill advised him, as well as concentrating on other business interests and following his two sporting passions, motor racing and ski-ing. Although Bill never won a CART race, he was the runner-up in the 1981 Championship with a consistent run of podium places that season and was 1979 CART Rookie of the Year. Very sadly, Bill was killed in 2016, when operating a crane at a building site near a wood cabin on the side of Kendall Mountain. The crane tipped over after gaining sudden accleration, pinning poor Bill and killing him instantly. Bill, despite approaching 80 years of age, also worked as a volunteer firefighter in Silverton, plus groomed the cross country ski trails and the snowmobile trails on Kendall Mountain during the winter. He was also involved in many local charity and community events in Silverton, plus also enjoyed photography.
