For many years, Herm ran and worked for his own helmet design company, which both designed and painted customised helmets for any racing driver or motorcyclist. He also worked as a race instructor. Sadly, Herm died in 2016 from liver and renal failure after suffering declining health for some while. Johnson won the 1976 SCCA Super Vee Nationals and the USAC Mini-Indy Championship one year later. When he went ice-racing he met up with lumber merchant John Menard, getting him interested in the sport. Menard helped his friend to reach the CART series, where Herm stayed until 1986, retiring after suffering numerous serious injuries in a crash during the Indianapolis 500 qualifying sessions. Herm also survived a serious road crash in 2011.
