A wealthy car collector and former engineer, he lived in Malta for many years, retaining an interest in F1 until his death. James actually started racing before World War 2, in national events in 1938 and 1939, before returning to racing in 1947 in hillclimbs and speed trials. After racing in the Chichester Cup at Goodwood and the British Grand Prix Libre race in 1952, James retired from the sport.
