The 1956 Indianapolis 500 winner, Pat died after a long battle with cancer. Drifted away from the sport in the 1970's, refusing invitations to return to the speedway, and took up pigeon racing. Also ran a bar in Chicago for a while. After his top-line career ended, Flaherty set up a portable go-kart track, made of wood, which he took to state fairs. To drum up business, he often raced against all-comers and more often than not won!
