Born:

28 Jul 1924
Rome

Died:

06 Jul 1958
Reims Circuit, France

Nationality:

Italy

Grands Prix:

24 (1953-1958)

Killed in the French Grand Prix. A fast, talented but crashprone driver, Luigi's career started ominously, when in his 1st race, he crashed into a statue of national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi! After a spell in sportscars, Luigi became extremely accomplished and took many wins, including some in F1. At his peak when he died, his death provoked a fevered national discussion about the future of motor racing and Ferrari. Luigi's two elder brothers also raced in national events. Luigi never quite had the success his talent deserved - partly his own fault by crashing or not looking after the car - but he did win the 1956 Argentine Grand Prix (jointly with Fangio), the 1958 Targa Florio and 3 non-championship Formula 1 races.
