Killed on the slow-down lap of the Nurburging 1000km of 1958. Raced mostly, and most successfully, in sportscars. Bauer was one of the very first drivers to race overseas for Lotus, but the chance came when Colin Chapman didn't make the Nurburgring 1000km practice in time. Bauer, despite his reputation as a Nurburgring specialist, didn't have a drive at the time, so took over, came fourth and this result was a real boost to Chapman with the team still in its early days.
