Works in television. Retired from driving only in the late 1990's, although he occasionally competes in either historic races or special one-off drives in numerous series. He now works in motor racing administration and was the head of was then called the Ancien Pilotes. A thoughtful, sensitive and humorous man, who is immensely popular, Mass was initially a merchant seaman before embarking on a racing career, in hillclimbing in 1968. Jochen then became one of the very greatest sportscar drivers of his era as well as being a long-time Grand Prix driver. Mass won Le Mans in 1989 and Sebring in 1987, but also became a touring car champion, taking the European Crown in 1972.
