After leaving East Germany for West, he ran a number of dealerships, with the franchises for Guzzi's, Lancia's, Panhard's and Triumph's amongst many others. He was also a superb shotputter. He later re-married and emigrated to Australia where he passed away. Merkel competed in motorcycling pre-war and then hillclimbs before moving to West Germany in 1948. Thereafter, Harry was a semi-regular sportscar driver until 1963. He then ran his aforementioned Aut-Merkel dealership in Munich initially, then expanded in Frankfurt and Hamburg, before moving to Australia in the mid-1960's.
