A touring car and sportscar legend, 'Smokin' Jo' decided to retire from competitive driving in 2003. He remained with his team at the time of his retirement, Opel, in an ambassadorial role for the company's racing department as well as working as a racing instructor for them. He now runs the family crane hire business in Waiblingen. As well as winning at Le Mans in 1999, Joachim was also German Formula 3 Champion in 1988. Joachim is the younger brother of Manfred.
