Drove mainly in Formula 2, Formula Junior, touring cars and predominantly, hillclimbs. It was in the latter, that he both started and finished his career, racing on until 1964 after initially starting in 1949. Ludwig also drove sportscars on occasion, with a few endurance and GT events but he was never really a challenger for honours in any category he appeared in. However he had a lot of controversy during his career and in fact, before his career, as he had a jail term for breaking trade and customs laws in trading in other countries. He first raced in 1950, largely in hillclimb events. A blunt man, he would often blame anything other than himself for any misfortune that occurred. He was a regular racer in both Austria and East Germany, but he also competed in hillclimbs in both Switzerland and Italy. Although he was involved in many on-track incidents, including tangling with the likes of Bira and von Hanstein, he blamed them, the authorities and many others of a conspiracy theory to blame him instead. He wrote his autobiography in 1966, using that as a chance to fire a shot at all those who had crossed him, in his eyes, fifteen or so years before.
