Fast, but erratic driver, often in sportscars as well as Formula 1. Was also good in Formula 2 and touring cars, although the major wins largely eluded him. Mechanically minded, he was the father of Markus. Died in a sportscar crash at the Mosport circuit. He was encouraged by friends to take up racing in 1976 and competed in the Volkswagen Scirocco Cup, becoming champion in his first racing season. He soon got a contract for BMW in touring cars and this affiliation also helped him get a Formula 2 drive. The BMW links helped Manfred also find a few seats in Formula 1, but he didn't really have a great deal of success in the category.
