A businessman in the leather industry, Dauer was the boss of Dauer Sportswagen, which started off as a racing team in sportscars, before moving into production of road cars. The team did well, and the car firm did very well but the firm went out of business in the late 2000's and Dauer enjoyed doing something very different in dog breeding and shows. However, in 2010, he was jailed for 3 and a half years for tax evasion. A multiple winner in German Formula 3, Dauer also did well in sportscars and was the 1988 Interserie Champion, which came a year after he formed his racing team. Dauer is now out of prison and is involved in road safety programmes for young drivers. He has also appeared at some historic events as a spectator.
