Later became head of Audi's sporting division and was a long-time chassis engineer. Then later worked as a car tuner and still drove at historic events until well into his 80's. Basche was a sometime touring car driver when he was undertaking his main role as being head of the BMW sports department. He was instrumental in the development of the Formula 2 cars for BMW and as a result, would drive on occasion to subsequently help the car improve from a driver's perspective. Dieter also raced in sportscars and hillclimbs before retiring in 1979 to take up his role at Audi. During his role as engineer there, he worked on rally, sports and touring cars with great success, before stepping down in 1993.
