Much better known as a rally driver and hillclimber, who had brief attempts at Formula 2 and Formula 3. Died after a short illness relatively recently. He regularly raced a Renault Alpine A110. In 1970, he became Renault Sports's first factory driver in hillclimbs, finishing as runner-up in the German Mountain Championship that year. He then won the title in 1971, again with the Alpine car. He then followed up with this success by racing as works driver in Renault's single-seater programme. Formula 1 was never an aim as Dieter was already well in his thirties, but the team greatly valued his technical support. Dieter carried on racing until 1982.
