Sensational talent killed in sportscar race at Spa after hurtling into the barriers at Eau Rouge after tangling with Jacky Ickx. Bellof, who was the son of a rally driver won the 1981 German Formula Ford title in only his second season of racing cars, and jumped up to Formula 2 in 1982, winning twice that year. Unusually, he combined a full Formula 1 programme with as full a sportscar programme as he could manage and won the 1984 World Sportscar Championship whilst still being a F1 driver for Tyrrell. Raw, exciting and fast, Bellof is still fondly remembered by many, thirty years after his death.
