Motoring trade manager from Mannheim. A very capable amateur indeed, with 2nd at Le Mans in 1952 with Helmut Niedermayr in their Mercedes Benz 300SL a highlight. Helfrich also won the German Formula 2 championship in 1953, a year which also saw him come third in the Rhineland Cup held at the Nurburgring. A good car developer, he later liased with Borgward and then raced in hillclimbs, sportscars and Formula 3, again taking many wins, until he stopped racing in the late 1950's.
