After retirement, Duke worked for Autolite for 10 years, living in Phoenix. He moved back to Indianapolis after his spell there and retained his links with the sport through his membership of the board of the 500 Old Timers Club. He was driven around the track by Al Unser in 2000 when the Speedway honoured him and George Connor and just 3 weeks before his death, he was regularly signing autographs and doing magazine interviews. Duke's grandson, by the same name, keeps up the racing tradition, as he races in sprint, dirt and midget cars. Nalon was of French ancestry and initially worked in a steel mill before becoming a mechanic for Wally Zale. Inspired by Zale, he became a racing driver himself.
