Relief driver for Chitwood in 1948, but shortly afterwards, he was killed in a race at his local track. Shackleford lost control of his car and careered through a fence and down an embankment. At the time of his death Shackleford had been racing for twelve seasons, largely in sprint car racing, but also in midget cars. Shackleford, at his death, was the reigning AAA Midwest Sprint Car Champion and very much at his peak. Shackleford is still well remembered in his local area for his sprint car efforts.
