Killed in qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 in his first race after a two year retirement. Also raced motorcycles, in which he started his racing career after a spell of riding them as part of a touring stunt show. He moved to racing just before World War One - in which he served - and worked as a motorcycle mechanic. In 1924, he switched to cars, initially part-time, but did so well that Miller took him on as a works driver in 1925. Thereafter Hepburn became a popular and quick driver but never did win the Indianapolis 500.
