Real name Russell George, Buddy was a long-time tester and worker for Hudson Automobiles, for whom he worked for nigh on twenty years. Marr served in World War 1, having been based in Rhode Island before the war, and prior to that, worked as a mechanic for the Harkness racing team who were based in New York City. He also had spells in Gary, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan, where clearly shows Marr followed where the work was at the time for the trade. Marr later built a number of cars for later Indianapolis 500 entries between 1931 and 1933 for Chet Miller, who denied Marr an Indidanapolis 500 start in 1928; Marr had qualified twenty-eighth when Miller tested the car and then crashed, making the car a write-off for the race. Buddy also worked in car merchandising.
