Brother of 1946 winner, George. Hal, who was only 5 foot 4 inches tall, was born in Canada, but lived a long time in the USA, having moved there in 1923, and was a citizen by the time he appeared at Indianapolis. Mainly raced dirt and midget cars, starting his career in roadsters in 1930. He retired in 1955 after immense success in sprint cars and then continued to keep links with the sport and attended events right up to the early 1990's.
