Full name Leslie, he was killed in a crash at his local track. Les was a midget and sprint car ace, who won the 1937 North West Racing Association Championship title. He also competed in big cars and raced along the Pacific Coast. His son of the same name, only five at his father's death, later fought in Vietnam. Anderson's best result at Indianapolis was in his first year there, finishing eleventh after qualifying an impressive seventh. He also qualified in the top 10 one year later, but failed to finish due to a gearbox problem.
