Worked as a mechanic for Duesenberg, then became a car owner and finally a garage owner. Johnson, whose full name was Arthur Hurst Johnson, enjoyed a full season of racing in 1916 in his Crawford-Duesenberg, mainly concentrating on board ovals. His best two results, however, a fifth place, followed by a second place on the 22nd July 1916, came at Kansas City's dirt oval. Art also finished eighth in his only Indianapolis 500. Johnson, at various times in his life, was based in Sioux City, Iowa, Chicago, Illinois and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but died in Alabama. He served his country during World War 1, reaching the rank of first lieutenant.
