Later became Chief Steward of the Indianapolis 500 from 1935 to 1939. A local favourite, he was an early star, especially on road courses. Also worked in real estate and Charles also had a long-standing car supply business. Merz was a winner in the early days of the sport, winning a 24 Hour race at the Indianapolis Showgrounds with Jap Clemons. Merz was one of main drivers of the National car company and took three key wins in 1911 and 1912, winning the Panana-Pacific Road Race, the Leon Shettler Cup and the Illinois National Trophy. Merz carried on racing until 1916.
