Dirt and board track racer, sometimes in road races. Later became a car owner but suffered tragedy when Herb Jones died in Cotey's car in 1926 Indianapolis 500 qualifying. Al entered his own car, the Elcar, for his 1927 effort. Cotey was a long time racer who specialised on board ovals. Cotey, who was also a long-time stunt driver, often drove for the Ogren Motor Car Company who were based in Chicago for a while. Often referred to in race reports as A. E. Cotey.
